If you live in a part of the world where summer has arrived, this post is for you. Consider it a Dizzy Blonde Public Service Announcement.
You’re totally welcome.
If you don’t live in a part of the world where it’s summertime, just wait. And by “just wait,” I mean:
- wait for the weather to turn hot and sticky (which is just “icky” with a “st” stuck on the front of it because everything sticks to things during summer)
- wait for bugs to start bugging you because that’s what they do
- wait for SPF 100 sunscreen to stain your clothes putrid yellow while letting your skin burn AND feel as if it will never be clean again
- wait for fans, air conditioners and capri pants in your size to be sold out
But don’t in any way, shape, or form, wait to read this post because it still has handyful infodatascoopage if you ever go outside.
Okay?
Good.
For some reason, when summer arrives, people want to wear skimpy duds and spend time exposed outside (of their houses, which are air conditioned and, you know, safe from things that are, you know, outside).
Don’t ask me to explain these facts. I’m just reporting it.
Anyway, if you adventure outside going or seeing something that you couldn’t experience perfectly safely and second-handly in the comfort of your favorite chair/bed/whatever on cable TV, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, the Interwebz, etcetera, … um, where was I going with this?
Oh yeah. If you’re foolish enough to expose yourself to the grueling outdoors, at least take some uncommon sense precautions. I offer uncommon sense, because that’s all I have.
You’re probably going to have to drive to get to wherever you think the fun is happening. For cupcake’s sake, do not drive while distracted. Do you know how many people never come back home alive because they drove without driving? Or they got hit by someone who was only pretending to drive? Oh, don’t look so confused. You know who you are! You’re probably reading this post on your phone or desktop while you’re driving!
And it’s not just phones that distract drivers.

Once you get to wherever you decided to expose yourself to alpha, beta, gamma, bippity, boppity, and boop rays, you have to know that wild critters are also going to be out there. They have a playbook. In the “Summertime” chapter, the instructions are quite clear. “Go to picnic areas. Preferably near water. Wait. Humans will come. They will bring food. They are food. They are neither fast nor clever. They wear flip-flops. Do not be ashamed of the easy pickings. Remember that winter is not far away.”
Critters do not have to be wild to behave in ways that could startle, create havoc, or ruin a perfectly yucky day in the sweltering heat.
Cats dart out and scare you all the time. Do they really need help? I saw this feller while walking Fozzie. Good thing Foz was on a leash. Setting the video to music was his idea. Fozzie is a very artsy guy.
If you really must go camping, People, make sure your equipment is in good condition.

You may, after reading this, deduce that I have something against summer.
Au contraire! (That’s “you silly, silly, goose!” in French.) I’m an invisible card-carrying Buddhist (the card is invisible, not me–just thought that might need explaining). I make no judgments. I understand that all things simply are…until they aren’t. My only intention was to warn you of the possible challenges you might encounter as you go out into the glaring sun looking for fun.
I sense my work here is done.

I don’t miss the humidity of the east coast. When it gets hot here, it’s usually quite dry, too. Again, sorry for being so silent! 🙂
Jul 11, 2016 @ 13:21:45
Too funny!
Jun 16, 2016 @ 13:29:48
Summer the time you make a lot of sense.
I recall (true story) having a Land Rover come alongside my Jag where I was parked, and having a very snooty look down at me from a goat seated comfortably in the passenger seat. The driver was a new neighbour who much preferred the company of goats to humans (come to think of it, that makes sense). He lived high on a hill in The Dargle, and we called him The Lonely Goatman.
Jun 15, 2016 @ 02:35:29
Awww, never mind the bears, I want more Fozzie. xx

YUP … summer is here with all it’s horrible stickiness and sweatiness.
For me, the best place to be is in my pool … BUT … at night. By then, the water is cozy warm, the lights create a loungy hotel feel and a glass that has a drink with an umbrella pulls paradise all together. Daytime is out as far as I’m concerned except for a groacery store run. I do that at 8:00 a.m. Run in and out. Go home and lounge in the cool, cool air conditioning. Ahhhh …
Verano (summer) just another season.
Oodles of Summer Songs to you … here’s a song to get you in a summer kind of mind …. The Beach Boys – Kokomo https://youtu.be/9ChADh1zt5I
Hugs,
Izzy 😎
p.s. it rains everyday in the afternoon all summer long ( nap time aka siesta). It cools everything down even you if you want to run naked in it. 😍In your private patio, of course. (yes, I have a private patio for such things. I’m older … remember???!!!

Here in North Carolina, we roast then freeze. At least inside my house. It’s about 90 today and I’m inside with my ailing AC which is supposed to go by the thermostat and go off and on as temp changes. But nooooo. I have to turn it off when I get goosebumps and turn it back on when I’m dripping on my desk. The black snakes in our yard are my concern, not spiders. I’m ok if I see them as I know they eat poisonous snakes so the black snakes get a free pass to slither on by. But, when they pop out unexpectedly? That’s taken away my love of gardening and sent me inside to roast, freeze and blog. I enjoy yours by the way. Look forward to reading more. Brrrr gotta turn it off again.
Jun 13, 2016 @ 20:59:46
Thanks, I’ve tucked it away for future use 🙂
Jun 13, 2016 @ 20:22:52
You are such a riot. Loving reading your brain out loud. Summer here has been good so far and I hope yours is too, Lorna. 😊💗
Jun 13, 2016 @ 16:09:54
Smiles. I love it!
Jun 13, 2016 @ 14:15:21
The icky weather arrived here a few days ago, and without an invitation. I had put a sign on the door that read, “No galoshes, no overcoat, no summer.” But it showed up without a collared shirt and a tie and itself at home.
Typically, July and August are our most miserable months, but summer has been known to come early and stay late–just like that cousin from your spouse’s side of the family who eats all your groceries and pees on the floor next to the toilet.
I’m already looking forward to November.
Jun 13, 2016 @ 13:08:50
😆
Jun 13, 2016 @ 12:15:02
Any excuse to postpone the gym, eh? 😉
Jun 13, 2016 @ 12:14:26
Here’s some Spanish for you, just to keep the international flavor going: hasta la pasta! 😉
Jun 13, 2016 @ 12:13:03
Thanks for stopping by for a visit. I’m glad you had a laugh while you were here. Summer in the Pacific NW is actually quite tolerable. I just prefer the gentle gray days. And I love that we’re all different–make the world much more interesting! 🙂
Jun 13, 2016 @ 12:06:21
From what I understand about Buddhism, as long as you notice your judgements, you’re good to go! Well, kind of… 😉
Jun 13, 2016 @ 12:04:36
Sounds very familiar! Out here in the Pacific NW, it’s been nice and cool and partly cloudy. Humidity isn’t a problem, though, and that’s a real bonus!
Jun 13, 2016 @ 11:57:33
Good for you! 🙂
Jun 13, 2016 @ 11:55:17
I suppose all the season are just a word–some we like better than others. 😉
Jun 13, 2016 @ 11:52:10
Yes, it was filled with hay! And good call on not saying anything about the thing you mentioned!!!! 😉
Jun 13, 2016 @ 11:47:34
That must have been delightful–a giraffe taking in the sight! 🙂
Jun 11, 2016 @ 12:02:57
For several days now we’ve had overcast and rainy weather. It keeps the heat lower but it pretty much feels like a sauna out there. I’m with you when it comes to summer heat, humidity and bugs…stay indoors! The strangest thing I’ve ever seen while driving was when the circus was coming into town and in their caravan of animals being hauled down the highway was a giraffe with his head sticking out enjoying the skyline of downtown Orlando. That was a surprising sight! 🙂
Jun 09, 2016 @ 08:20:45
Not only is the passenger a goat, but it looks like the rest of the vehicle is stuffed with hay. It’s a mobile barnyard!
I’m not going to address the wisdom of snapping pictures from your moving auto on a highway.
Jun 09, 2016 @ 00:44:59
I shall keep a look out… 🙂 😉
Jun 08, 2016 @ 23:52:23
Thanks, Lorna. I needed the smile this morning. I’m sympathetic to your view of things, although when I’m in the UK I must confess summer… well, it’s just a word.
Jun 08, 2016 @ 19:07:48
Love your twist on summer Lorna. It’s just showing its face here now. I’m not getting in too much trouble by staying inside air conditioned quarters and writing so far. 🙂
Jun 08, 2016 @ 13:40:44
For cupcake’s sake, you are funny. Love the tips and the ‘dog’ma. The weather in NE right now is just like New England. Cold Hot Sticky Humid Raining and Beautifully Sunny.
Jun 08, 2016 @ 11:38:51
One of the reasons I love Reno is the lack of humidity and weather that rarely gets above the low 90’s. It is scary to see what people wear (or don’t wear) during hot weather (think Walmart). On a sad note, in this morning’s paper they reported that they had to put down a bear up at North Lake Tahoe because crazy people were not securing their food. We are so at fault for so many things that happen to wildlife and I guess I am being judgmental, heh?
Jun 08, 2016 @ 11:20:06
That was hysterical. Thanks for the entertainment, LOL.
It’s summer (which I may never look at the same again thanks to this post :D) in my neck of the woods but we’ve got a cool one today. I’m kind of a tropical fish though. I like the heat….as long as I have a pool to cool off!
Jun 08, 2016 @ 10:43:00
It was pleasantly coolishly warm till last week, and now’s it’s all summery and hot all of a sudden, high humidity so it’s looking like afternoon tropical downpours want to start up. I got soaked yesterday after a very long day’s honest work at the other end of town. Your post comes in as a super-handy reminder of what to watch out for. I also found your Buddhist view of things highly enlightening, as well as that bit of French 🙂 Merci beaucoup for a bunch of smiles !
Jun 08, 2016 @ 10:01:49
Haha It just started rainy here. I was just about to leave for the gym, but I took a rain check. 😃👍
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:51:37
Do you see what a difference a comma can make? 😉 Glad I made you laugh!
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:50:59
Yeah, or some other reptile of the larger and toothier variety! Are you getting all the rain I keep reading about?
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:50:03
Summertime in Washington State is the best-kept secret in town…well, it was, at least! Last weekend, it was in the 90’s and wall-to-wall bright sunshine. Low humidity and light breezes. It was awful! 😉
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:48:11
Doesn’t everyone take in their bamboo at night? 😉
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:47:37
Ah, there you go! There is always a bright to everything…eventually! 🙂
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:47:07
Always a pleasure, Gerry! And if I hear of any good pesty pest deterrents, I’ll let you know! 🙂
Jun 08, 2016 @ 09:45:37
I expect to read about your shenanigans on the news wires…ar at least in the blogosphere! I wish I could be part of that visit! 🙂 Have fun and think of me. ❤
Jun 08, 2016 @ 04:25:49
Of course the summer is lovely and who could moan about “good” weather but I am a bit heat intolerant so sitting inside admiring the view in a heat wave comes naturally to me. Al Hood is coming to London very soon and I am meeting him on Monday 13th. Looking forward to it. Perhaps one day you will wander over the pond 🙂
Jun 08, 2016 @ 01:00:25
We have those pesky insects all year round here in England,,we call them people. Our summer has just arrived, or very close, I can only tell the difference between Summer/Winter/Spring or Autumn is because the weather people[insects] tell me. Thanks Lorna for the light hearted read that always brings a smile to my face… 😉
Jun 07, 2016 @ 20:39:30
Another few reasons for me to celebrate the fact that it is the beginning of winter here. 😉
Jun 07, 2016 @ 18:47:46
You have Panda neighbors! Nice! Just take in your bamboo plants at night.
Jun 07, 2016 @ 17:59:17
Do you get summer in your Washington? I get it in my Washington, but it isn’t very pleasant. Why don’t I live in New England???????
Jun 07, 2016 @ 15:28:37
Thanks so much for the smiles, Lorna. It’s hot and humid here and when I ventured outside yesterday to help trim the palm trees, I got bitten on my ankle by a pesky insect. 😦 At least it wasn’t an iguana. 🙂
Jun 07, 2016 @ 14:58:49
Oh gawd, laughing, laughing, laughing. Invisible card. Still laughing. 🙂
