It had to happen.
I should have known never to say never.
What can I say? (Except not never?)
I’m just a gal who can’t resist unconditional love.

How many time do I have ta tell ya, Baby? I love ya, all right? No, whatcha call it, conditions. Just make sure you keep these here pillows fluffed up good, okay? And how ’bout some Fig Newtons and milk? On the double, Baby.
Since I was 18 (I’m now 58), I’ve had at least one puppy-pal sharing my life.
Mr. Scrappy died in January and, since so much had already changed in my life, I thought I’d give doglessness a try.
And try I did.
- No more multiple daily walks armed with poop bags.
- No more worrying about dog-sitters when I left town.
- No more watching the clock if I was running errands because I didn’t want to mess up the dog’s schedule.
- No more crazy-happy jump-up-and-down soul to greet me when I came home.
- No one to follow me around, making me feel as if I was the most fascinating person on the planet.
- No one to teach silly tricks to.
I knew doglessness wasn’t working out for me when, while walking, I paid so much attention to other people’s dogs that those other people began to avoid me. I think they were concerned that I was the canine equivalent of a child molester. Not good.

What a nice dog! I really like your dog! Can I bond with your dog? I really miss my dog. Your dog is so sweet…
So I had to find me a puppy love of my own.
Every pal I’ve ever had has been a rescue.Β All were over a year old. That means they all came with baggage. Some with baggage bulkier than others, but all had issues.
For me the joy is being part of the transformation from a pup with luggage to a well-adjusted pal.
In early November, I found a guy who is a permanent and perfect addition to my home.
He’s different from any dog I’ve ever adopted.
He’s young–about a year old. But, in his mind, he’s very much a puppy. He’s the bounciest, silliest, goofiest guy I’ve ever known. He’s a terrier mix, but I believe that he’s part Tigger.
He’s the smallest dog I’ve ever had–weighing only about 22 pounds.
Because of his size, he’s the best lap dog I’ve ever known. He’s a pure cuddle bug (when he’s not bouncing around chasing or chewing on a toy).
He’s a stray from California. I’ve never known a California guy before. Are they all this loveable and goofy?
We’re in the process of learning basic manners. I’m happy to report that he’s a quick study.
I’m taking longer walks now–even though it’s now the rainy season–and loving it. Poop bags? Bring ’em on!
Life feels good again. I have a reason to get up and get going. And I laugh A LOT more these days.
Oh, yeah, the shelter in Portland named him Tumbleweed. The name just didn’t seem right, and they only had been calling him that for a week, so I named him Fozzie.
Most people want to call him Fonzie. Whatever. He comes when he’s called and that’s what matters!

You can call me Fonzie if you like. Hey, just call me and I’ll come a running! I don’t want to miss any fun!

Dec 18, 2015 @ 13:53:38
Party? Did you say party?
Dec 18, 2015 @ 13:53:01
Oh, Izzy. I know exactly how you feel. I closed my “pet heart”–no longer in business because it hurt too much when the last customer left. But the emptiness was filling me up…if that makes any sense. Because of Fozzie, I have found myself again–I’m more energetic, hopeful, happy, clownish. He brings it out in me. And it seems as if he has all of the best of all of my former dog pals rolled into him, plus he is the only true “lap dog” I’ve ever known.
Yes, I have to stop myself from thinking about how much I’ll miss him when he inevitably leaves me, but then I focus on all the current joy and pure love we share. I wouldn’t have any of that if he wasn’t here.
Yes, I still miss Scrappy, but his absence isn’t so sharp and stinging. I have a little bouncy, happy guy here to remind me to live in the now (not the then).
I know you’ll do whatever is right for you. Your heart is a very wise and generous one.
Love,
L

Such a sweetie!!! Cheers to Fonzie! Hope all is well with you as I try to get back to visiting the many good people.
Dec 11, 2015 @ 06:19:35
Dear Lorna,
I had a lump in my throat as I read this. I had mixed emotions. I was very happy for you and your new companion Fonzie. But, seeing scrappy and remembering your trauma … well, you know.
Recently, my hubby and I have been talking about getting new kitties. It’s difficult to think about. When we adopted our two new kitties after our dear Marshmellow had passed at the age 28 years, we thought they’d be our final pets. But, a year later, when a Bob cat killed them we vowed never again. It still makes me sad. But, you’ve given me hope to think about it again. Perhaps, after the holidays.
I’m really happy for you. I’m happier for Fonzie. We go to rescue places, too. He’s found the perfect Mom to take care and love him. A pet can give you a reason to get up in the morning. Big eyes and unconditional love is reason enough. Blessings to you both.
Izzy π
p.s. love the photos … love comes through in every one.
Dec 10, 2015 @ 22:07:56
Aw he is gorgeous. Have a wonderful time with him β€
Dec 10, 2015 @ 19:27:58
Aw, Fozzie is just the cutest! Congratulations to the two of you. I hope you’ll be very happy together. What a nice dog! I really like your dog! Can I bond with your dog? (Just kidding) π
Dec 10, 2015 @ 17:11:01
He’s just the cutest little thing π There aren’t many things in life better than the love of a fur-baby!
Dec 09, 2015 @ 18:03:11
He looks like a big puppy, so cute. Enjoy! Oh, and I read your great review of Christoph’s new book. I can’t wait to read that too! π

Lucky! Duncan makes up for it.
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:58:25

Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:40:40
Absolutely! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:40:06
He doesn’t shed, Elyse! He must have poodle in him (as well as Tigger)! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:39:20
I knew you’d be happy beyond words–just as I am! π β€
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:38:42
Yes, I waited too long…well, maybe I waited just long enough (for him to be available, right?)! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:37:53
I sure know the feeling. Phil said he couldn’t believe how different I am and how empty I was. He’s so happy that Fozzie is part of the family and has brought me back to, well, me!
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:36:17
I didn’t realize how not-me I was until Foz came into my life. I’m back, Diana!

Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:34:46
I guess my enthusiasm just can’t be contained! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:33:52
It is! Thanks, Dawne!
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:29:47
I missed that on your blog, but I’ll go back and check it out. I love when dogs make new discoveries. When I brought Fozzie home and turned on the TV for the first time, he started barking to beat the band. He thought new people were in the house! Every time a new person (actor) came on, he’d start barking again–so funny! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:27:17
Oh yes, he sits on furniture and sleeps on the bed. I’m spoiling him rotten! π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 10:26:19
Thanks, Al. It’s all tail wiggles over here, that’s for sure! I’m sure Scrappy approves. π
Dec 09, 2015 @ 09:56:47
Cute just ain’t gonna do it. He’s preciadorably cuddlastic! I am so happy for you. I mourned with you over Scrappy and now I am ecstatic with you over Fozzie. Let’s give it up for Lorna and da Foz!!
Dec 09, 2015 @ 09:50:52
I know he’s going to bring you a lot of love and happiness and that is a very nice thought, especially just coming up to Christmas. Is he allowed to sit on furniture I wonder.
Dec 09, 2015 @ 06:56:45
Ohhhh, I’m so excited for you. I loved when you said you laugh more. I never smiled so much as I did and when I got my first dog. Fozzie is a great name. He is adorable. I wish I could snuggle him myself. You even light up in those photos. Glad to hear he’s a quick study. One-year-old is still pretty much a puppy.
My guy, Max, just saw snow for the first time. Don’t know if you caught that on my blog. He is a Florida dog, so I feared he would hate it. What I forgot is that he’s a very furry dog. He LOVED it. I couldn’t get him to come in. He was catching snowballs in the air and rolling around in it. I’m so relieved he likes it here.
Dec 09, 2015 @ 04:45:54
Sounds like true love. I’m very happy for you both!
Dec 09, 2015 @ 01:07:20
You write so convincingly about having a dog, and he does look sweet, so I enjoyed your post even though I’m not a pet person π
Dec 08, 2015 @ 19:11:13
Fantastic! And Fozzie is the perfect name! HEY, FOZZIE!!! π
Dec 08, 2015 @ 17:13:33
He’s a handsome guy! We tried petlessness after our parrot died and only lasted 2 weeks. Congratulations on the new addition!
Dec 08, 2015 @ 17:13:17
My little guy is a California guy too. So is my little girl dog, for that matter. All of my dogs except the first have been rescued. They seem to know what we saved them from. And so, they reciprocate. They save us too. Fozzie is so cute. My niece’s oldest daughter went off to college this year. After a couple of months of being depressed she rescued a German Shepherd. The difference in her is palpable.
Dec 08, 2015 @ 14:13:03
I’m so happy for you.
Very handsome guy! π
About time, by the way! (Fozzie made me say that.)
Dec 08, 2015 @ 14:01:33
My heart is soaring beyond description. He is adorable and the two of you together look like you were made for each other. Love to you both, Auntie paw-wet
Dec 08, 2015 @ 13:46:20
Oh, and I recommend you stop wearing black now.
Dec 08, 2015 @ 13:46:16
He looks utterly enchanting.
Ever noticed how differently ‘I feel a new man’ comes across depending on whether a man or a woman says it? π
Dec 08, 2015 @ 13:46:03
I am sooooooooooooo happy for you. I love Fozzie! He is adorable. Long, safe life to him and you!
