I’m going to be up-front with you.
I’m going out on a limb with this submission to Rochelle’s Friday Fictioneer’s 100-word challenge.
First of all, I’m submitting it on a Friday. Whoa, right?
Second of all, it’s a poem. I’m no poet. I don’t understand poetry. So just consider these 97 words arranged as if they were deep poet-like ruminationings.

Enough with the dizzy blonde jokes. I’m smart enough ot profreed my own typping. And I meant to typpe that wrd, ruminationings.
I’m just being honest.
Plus, I want to lower your expectations so you think I did a good job this week.
This week’s dramatic photo comes to us from Madison Woods.
This is a free-form poem and it’s about me, so it’s not really fiction. I guess that would be the third way I’m going out on limb.
Consider me a risk-averse risk-taker submitting a verse.
A Child of the Moon
I am a child of the moon.
She illuminated the night of my birth,
on a cold November night when darkness tipped the scales of daylight.
I entered life in the softness of shadows.
In the cool, gentle umbra, I seek refuge from rays that could burn me through,
leaving scars without ever trying.
Yet darkness exists because of light.
I know this irony well.
When I gaze upon my shadow, I see both empty and full.
Empty Lorna ready to be filled and Filled Lorna ready to be emptied.
Just like any child of the moon.
*****
Those of you who know me, know that I am a Highly Sensitive Person. Bright light bothers me. So do loud noises. I’d rather be in a cool, dark place than, say, at a sunny, crowded beach. In a former life, I was quite possibly a bat.
Ta ta till next week…

Hey now! I knew there was a reason we got on so well… 🙂
Aug 17, 2015 @ 06:00:49
Indeed. My birthday is on the 16th
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:36:48
I’m so glad you related to the poem. And, yes, I do have a serious, sensitive side that I rarely reveal in this blog…at least in a serious way.
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:34:45
Ah, maybe a fellow Scorpio? That would explain a lot! 😉
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:33:59
Thanks so much! Sorry I’m taking so long getting back to your comment. I really got side-tracked these past few weeks… 😐
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:32:37
Hey, they are just words, right? 😉
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:31:22
I’m not sure I understand the initial rant…
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:30:01
Thanks so much. 🙂
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:29:09
Not TMI at all. I understand completely. Sometimes I get confused as to what I’m feeling versus what others are feeling!
Aug 16, 2015 @ 20:18:21
I’ll take it! Thanks!
Aug 11, 2015 @ 04:12:56
Lovely images, beautiful feeling, and a pleasing pace and rhythm. I’d say it’s a good poem.
Aug 09, 2015 @ 11:14:07
I especially liked, “empty Lorna ready to be filled and filled Lorna ready to be emptied.” I love paradoxes, and I can relate to it as well.
I’m highly sensitive, too. But, being a Libra, I’m a stickler for balance. Not that I’m into astrology, but the description of Libras fits me like that cat suit (your bat woman picture) fits that actress. So, too much light and I freak out. Too much dark and I freak out. I need it juuuust right. Yes, I’ve been called Goldylocks before, and not because of my hair. I’m highly sensitive in the way of emotions. I’m an emotional person, but I’m sensitive to picking up on others emotions, too. Sometimes it’s hard for me to tell the difference. Not that you needed this TMI, but there ya go.
I thought your poem was a beautiful insight into your sensitivity.
Aug 09, 2015 @ 05:49:47
Dear Lorna,
I enjoyed the ethereal nature of your poem, you daughter of the moon, you. Lovely.
Shalom,
Rochelle

moonlight’s perfect for a Highly Sensitive Person! I liked “..when the darkness tipped the scales of daylight..” and the word “umbra” that has a softeness of its own (the Italian Umbria region’s aesthetics are particularly … soft).
Aug 08, 2015 @ 19:26:15
I’m not sure I understand the initial rant … and that’s ok … but I thought your poem was good and fitting with the image …. so cheers to the non-poet!
Aug 08, 2015 @ 16:13:17
Nice job for a chick who isn’t a poet 🙂
Aug 08, 2015 @ 13:51:50
Very lovely poem.
Aug 08, 2015 @ 12:51:30
You exceeded my lowered expectations. In fact, I would say it was quite good. I was born on a November night too. I don’t know about the moon phase that night, but Grandma said I grunted like a baby pig on the way home. Now, I grunt like a big hog. Always hungry.
Aug 08, 2015 @ 12:04:46
Ohhh, I really liked your poem. You show your sensitive side in your poetry (which, really, is what you’re supposed to do). I’m not sensitive to light and noise like you, and yet, I AM. I related to when feeling empty, ready to be filled, yet when full, so ready to be emptied. xo
Aug 08, 2015 @ 09:49:41
Ah, and the sisterhood grows!
Aug 08, 2015 @ 09:28:43
XOXO ❤
Aug 08, 2015 @ 07:29:12
I like this very much – I realise i”m a child of the moon and quite possibly a former bat too!! Great poetry 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 17:48:23
Sweet, V, thanks so much. Now I’m feeling much more confident! 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 17:47:45
Aw, thanks! But I think this was just beginner’s luck…
Aug 07, 2015 @ 17:46:47
Thanks…beginners luck, perhaps!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 16:37:48
I found this very poetic. “leaving scars without ever trying”~ this line alone is beautiful, surrounded by the others it’s …well…poetry! Kudos.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 15:47:24
Like you I don’t claim to be a poet, but you just proved that you actually are! Delightful!

From one highly sensitive person to another, from one poet to ANOTHER. You nailed it, Lorna. Hope to see more poetry from you.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 13:34:52
Of course! I’m always thinking about you, Dahling!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 13:33:25
Thanks. I don’t know where this stuff comes from. Probably the full part of me! Full of what, though… 😉
Aug 07, 2015 @ 13:32:31
Yeah. It seems that those who post on Fridays are the procrastinators!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 13:05:31
I always love birth stories and this is lovely – the softness of shadows. Beautiful!
As to posting on a Friday – I am always amazed by the early birds.I need time to think and dream.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 12:06:14
That was great! I especially liked the empty/full Lorna line 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:52:48
I’m healing slowly. I saw my surgeon yesterday. He was pleased with my wound and progress. I’m pleased too. Thank you for asking. ❤️
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:37:24
All right…if you say so. 😉
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:36:46
Thank you. I’m blushing! 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:27:03
That is pretty good for someone who says they cannot write poetry… well done…if I may say so.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:12:01
No, no! Keep going. 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 11:10:56
My goodness. I really don’t know what to say. Maybe I should stop while I’m ahead! 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:34:36
Heavens! This was gorgeous, Lorna. You should write more poetry! It suits you well. Anyway, you fooled me, but I’m not surprised either. I’d say you are poet after all.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:28:59
Thanks. I am a woman of mystery (can’t you tell by my avatar?) ;). My dizzy blonde persona works for my blog, but I have my contemplative moments, too.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:15:32
I knew you would. 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:15:09
You write awesome poetry, Jani. What are you talking about? A compliment about a poem from you means the world to me! ❤
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:06:52
Well, we’re in the same boat! Thanks. 🙂
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:06:29
You, too, my friend! ❤
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:05:56
Aw, thanks, Izzy. How’s your recovery going?
Aug 07, 2015 @ 10:02:41
Thanks! I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to poetry, so your comment is quite encouraging!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 09:58:59
You made me think about the sky when I was born, and I realize: I’m a child of the stars, heheh.
Great poem, I admire everyone who can write one, I know very little about poetry. And I love the references to the moon, this is so much deeper than you want to make us believe in your funny intro.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 08:57:26
Perfect!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 07:05:26
Super poem for a non-poet. I liked this very much, Lorna. But, I must say I love everything you write. It seems so easy.
I am a child born under the sign of the moon. This felt like it could be written for my entry into the world. 😊
A very affecting line for me: “When I gaze upon my shadow, I see both empty and full.” GREAT write for the prompt. 😥
Have a SUPER quiet weekend ….
Issy 😎
Aug 07, 2015 @ 06:46:38
That’s cute, you want to lower our expectations. But there was no need to, that’s a great poem. I love the emptying and filling aspects. It’s so true for al of us, isn’t it? Have a great weekend my friend. ❤
Aug 07, 2015 @ 05:06:36
I know very little about poetry, but enjoyed this…your wording is great.
Aug 07, 2015 @ 04:30:37
Damn girl. You good. End yer tiping wuz reel gud two!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 00:51:53
If I try to write a poem I cannot string two words together, so I’m in awe at your poem. A Moon child… ah…I was born at midday on a Sunday. Well, I needed some time off!
Aug 07, 2015 @ 00:36:23
As an Hsp, I get your world. And I enjoyed your poem very much ❤️
