You should know by now to expect the unexpected over here at Lorna’s Voice.
I certainly have gotten used to being surprised by what comes out of my mouth.
Good thing, too, because I’m almost 60 and have forgotten that I should care am a woman who is comfortable in her own skin (because the darned stuff keeps stretching).
Anyway. It’s time for another flash fiction challenge from Rochelle and her merry band of Friday Fictioneers (of which, I’m one…merry and a Fictioneer, that is).
Today’s photo comes to us by way of Raina Na.
The genre is realistic fiction and here is my story, coming in at 100 words.
Dick and Dave’s Decidedly Despicable Adventure
Dick and Dave peeked in the window. The waning moon in the gauzy night sky cast a timid shadow into the tidy kitchen.
“Don’t look like no one lives here,” Dick whispered.
“Maybe … What if these freaks is too damn clean fer their own good?” Dave snickered, elbowing Dick’s beefy arm.
Dick nodded. “Let’s see.”
Dick jimmied the lock while Dave stood guard. Once they were inside, they foraged for food. When they found only gluten-free, sugar-free, all natural snacks, Dave snapped. He used the blue vase to assault the paper lanterns. “That’ll learn ‘em.”
Neither man heard the sirens.
*****
This fictional story was inspired by real events taking place now very close to the place I called “home” not so long ago.
Have you heard about the two killers, David Sweat and Richard Matt, who escaped from the maximum security state prison in Dannemora, New York this past Saturday?
Well, I used to live not all that far away from there. Some of my family lives fairly close to there.
I’ll be quite happy when these two convicts are apprehended. One of them dismembered the guy he killed. Sheesh!
I know they could be in Canada or Mexico (not that I want them to be anywhere else but behind better bars than they were behind), but they also could be sneaking around a B&B in any one of the small, quaint Adirondack towns surrounded by dense forests.
These two jailbirds inspired my story this week.

Jun 17, 2015 @ 14:23:05
Let’s just hope no nefarious characters wander your way!
Jun 17, 2015 @ 10:03:42
Luckily, they closed the prison in our city. Less chance of escaped convicts in the south of England. Mind you, some of the riff raff you see around makes we wonder!!! Good light story with a darker origin to it.
Jun 16, 2015 @ 20:06:44
I know…even the little bit of levity in the story can’t counteract the gravity of the situation. Oh well…
Jun 16, 2015 @ 20:05:50
Right. I bet she’s reflecting on her life choices right about now…
Jun 16, 2015 @ 19:57:22
Thanks for popping over and reading, Suzanne. Yes, this is a scary situation and they must either be quite desperate or laughing somewhere in the comfort and safety of some place far away…Either way, I don’t have a good feeling about this.
Jun 16, 2015 @ 18:34:47
That’s really scary, but well done, Lorna. I saw on the news tonight that they still haven’t found those men. They could be anywhere. Good story. I’m glad they didn’t hear the sirens. — Suzanne
Jun 16, 2015 @ 16:49:33
They were already in a maximum security facility…whatever the heck that counts for. So assaulting paper lanterns could just land them…where? Doing hard time in a gift shop or at IKEA?
Jun 15, 2015 @ 13:35:06
At least you won’t have to worry about those two any more. They only got minimum security for chopping people up, but now that they’ve committed paper-lantern assault, I’m sure they’ll be in lock-down round-the-clock.
Jun 15, 2015 @ 03:47:27
I’m so glad you finished with the sirens. Characters like that should definitely be locked up. Funny intro, and a scary story about the real Dick and Dave. I feel very safe way over here on the other side of the world, although we do have our own villains to worry about.
Jun 15, 2015 @ 00:48:08
Sends a shiver up the spine.
Jun 14, 2015 @ 20:48:07
Oh Lorna! This is hilarious – and Dave hitting the paper lanterns 😛 Loved that part.
I liked learning to read with Dick and Jane = I’m probably nicely warped in many ways for it, too.
Just read these two may or may not be in Mexico.

Jun 14, 2015 @ 20:11:12
That’s what I’m thinking.
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:34:56
Very true!
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:34:33
Unfortunately, I think so, too…
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:33:24
Thanks! 🙂
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:32:09
Not yet, and it’s been over a week. The authorities still believe they are in the woods close to the prison since their get-away driver never came (a woman who worked in the prison). Sounds like a book and movie could come from this too real to be made up story!
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:29:46
Yes, I think you’re safe from these two fugitives. They don’t strike me as the European traveler types!
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:28:28
Ha ha!
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:25:58
Thanks, Peter. They are still on the loose…somewhere. The authorities suspect that they remain local since their get-away driver (a prison employee, a woman) failed to show up). I keep in regular contact with my family back home, so I know they are safe. It’s all very unsettling, though…
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:19:50
Thanks so much…for the comment and for popping over to visit! 🙂
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:16:04
Yes, carbs and fat have a way of soothing the savage beast…or is that music? 😉
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:15:10
If the troopers don’t find them, the notorious Adirondack black flies will! 😉
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:11:41
Thanks, Rochelle! I never know where these photos will lead me. I guess that’s part of the fun of these challenges! 🙂
Jun 14, 2015 @ 19:10:44
Well, that might be the only reason to like these fugitives! 😉 Thanks for popping by and commenting! 🙂
Jun 14, 2015 @ 18:38:35
These boys aren’t the sharpest pencils in the box. Thanks for the smile. I like Dick and Dave for NOT liking all the health food.
Jun 14, 2015 @ 18:28:01
Dear Lorna,
Fascinating, if not amusing, take on true events. I’ll be on the lookout.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Jun 14, 2015 @ 16:07:53
Great story. I could just picture the two!
Ugh… Could the just be apprehended already so we can stop seeing it on the news?
Jun 14, 2015 @ 15:11:45
This reminds me to stack up with plenty of lardfilled bread and pork for those burglars to stay calm…
Jun 13, 2015 @ 18:18:12
The thought of a pair of murderers lurking is truly terrifying. I hope they’re caught soon. Great story, as well. 🙂
Jun 13, 2015 @ 13:40:06
You are just so funny, Lorna 🙂 I love Dick and Dave’s voices. So authentic.
Jun 13, 2015 @ 09:22:00
I loved the story, but the two runaway killers. That is another thing altogether. I have to stretch to imagine how a man can become like that, and the idea of meeting his uncomprehending and destructive brutality, or have anyone I know or love meet it is very unsettling. You have my sympathy as I’m sure you know
Jun 13, 2015 @ 03:24:42
I like the last line. And the fact I’m on the other side of the big pond!
Jun 13, 2015 @ 03:09:39
Disturbingly topical. I know what you mean about never knowing what you will write until you get started. Nicely done.
Jun 13, 2015 @ 02:21:09
Burglary at any time is bad but read in conjunction with your back story it si chilling. Hope they have caught the real murderers as quickly as your two were captured.
Jun 13, 2015 @ 01:11:51
Very funny, and what a great way to do something with the background story.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 22:41:07
I think your guys might be a tad nicer than their real life counterparts.
Just a tad.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 22:19:55
You make me really glad I’m on the other end of the country. Paper lanterns are the least of what could be hurt.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 21:06:52
And they arrested that lady in the tailor shop who helped them. Not that that is going to help find them.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 20:50:27
How frightening, Lorna, that those guys escaped and that they’re loose! We have a prison where I live, too. The thought occurs to me when I see the helicopters circling. Nicely done story. It’s a little too real. Great job!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 17:38:24
Serves them right! 😉
Jun 12, 2015 @ 17:37:52
And who doesn’t love gluten-free, sugar-free, all-natural snacks? I mean, really! They must be barbarians. I hope the Adirondack black flies have a feast on these two low-lives!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 17:35:34
Yes, it is. Just read today that their get-away driver didn’t show up and bloodhounds picked up their scent in the nearby woods. The man-hunt continues in the Adirondacks. But who knows…
Jun 12, 2015 @ 14:28:12
That’s it… Yep, it’s Dick and Jane for me! 😀
Jun 12, 2015 @ 13:17:57
Great writing, Lorna–with a nice succinct ending. I enjoy flash fiction…probably because of my attention deficit disorder.
Those escapees are awful and there’s so many places in that part of the world to hide. But then, they could be anywhere, which is a really scary thought.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 12:35:01
Assaulting paper lanterns….indeed! It’s the chair for them this time!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 11:17:00
Ditto that! 🙂
Jun 12, 2015 @ 11:07:34
Quite a let down, all that trouble breaking in and not a tasty sugary snack in sight!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 10:41:45
Glad you picked up on the healthy food options available to these guys. That just popped into my head as I was writing this. I smiled at the thought of how disappointing it would be to these thugs who were sick of prison food and wanted something decadent and “real.” I usually opt for healthy choices, but didn’t think they would be the kind to appreciate the fare at this lovely B&B. Serves them right! :
Jun 12, 2015 @ 10:37:03
Just doing my part…
Jun 12, 2015 @ 10:36:01
Just read in the paper that they arranged for a get away driver, but she failed to show up. Authorities believe they are still in the woods around the Adirondacks. I hope the bugs get them!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 10:34:13
I agree. That’s all they deserve!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 10:30:23
Thanks! And I hope these two are apprehended before anyone gets hurt.
Jun 12, 2015 @ 08:44:11
Being from Canada, I hope the 2 don’t show up across the border. But then the mounties* always get their man.
* Royal Canadian Mounted Police RMCP
Enjoyed the story especially what the kitchen contained!
Jun 12, 2015 @ 00:22:52
prison food would be a better treat for these guys. 🙂
Jun 11, 2015 @ 23:12:47
I’m concerned those killers are now in my country, Canada. I can’t imagine they had such an elaborate plan, most likely with inside help and they hadn’t had a plan for a ride and some money to get them somewhere else before the dogs come sniffin’.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 20:55:49
Way to use Friday Fictioneers as a Public Service Announcement.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 19:54:57
Look I know these are bad guys, but no-one deserves to be stuck in a room with gluten-free/sugar-free “food”. Also – loved the ‘Dick and Jane’ reference’ 🙂
The reports on these two were pretty disturbing, not the least the constant reference to how one is ‘particularly well endowed’. I mean, good for him, but dude is still a murderer.
A fun read.
KT
Jun 11, 2015 @ 17:24:16
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. I never know what I’m going to write, but that story in the news has been on my mind and the picture just seemed a perfect fit.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 17:22:27
Well, the genre was realistic fiction… 😉 Hope you can sleep tonight!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 17:17:17
Yikes! Starts out all poetic, assaults the décor monstrously then freaks me out even from a different continent with those two dreadful photos. I mean who the heck uses inches any more? Enough to keep any sane person awake at night.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 17:02:32
At least they didn’t hear the sirens! Love knowing the inspiration behind the story. So cool! Not that we escaped convicts but that iife and photo can bring on such inspiration! Excellent!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 16:54:51
I’m doing my best to help the FBI! (Or whoever is trying to get these guys back in confinement)!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 16:53:30
You’re so kind, Christine. I have a great idea for one–totally fictional this time. But it’s nothing more than an idea for now. I’m doing the local promotional thing for my two books right now and teaching a writing workshop. That’s keeping me busy. Plus all this blogging is taking up a lot of time!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 16:50:21
Sounds like you’ve sampled them before!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 16:47:30
Yes, a little twister-oo on the plot… 😉
Jun 11, 2015 @ 16:18:48
lol… been a little while since I read a Dick and Jane book… So Dick and Dave? Mm now I’m not sure which I prefer… I’ll have dig one out and compare. 😀
Jun 11, 2015 @ 14:00:49
I don’t blame them. It’s always a good idea to add salt to your paper lanterns. Otherwise, they’re rather dry and tasteless. I recommend adding sriracha sauce too. It brings a dash of color and a touch of pizazz, especially if you’re feeling frisky.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 12:32:34
You are so creative! I loved that story! I hope you’ve got another book in the works.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:54:35
Thanks, Narelle. These are quite fun to write. I never know what the photo prompt will be and where it will take me!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:51:35
Yup, should be peeked. Darn auto correct!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:51:08
Liked your little before and after the story pieces too! Good warning about the murderous duo.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:49:54
I had peeked and the thing auto corrected. I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:46:41
Me, too! Thanks for reading, Olga!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:46:15
Right. Then they would have settled in and terrorized the owners. Living clean has its advantages!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:45:06
Great idea! I hope they are found, soon, too…
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:44:08
For all I know, they could be closer to me than to them by now! It is quite disturbing. Glad you liked the story, P!
Jun 11, 2015 @ 10:42:34
I absolutely love your story! No surprise. Of course my take was they weren’t criminals. Your old neighborhood is in a state of understandable high anxiety. Hope everyone remains safe.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 08:58:02
Thanks for hepling in the search. Chris R says it is his new summer job-looking for these guys. There is $100.000.00 reward. My idea is have mom park her car in the driveway-with the keys and call it in. Her new summer vacation fund. Hope they are found soon. Love ya.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 08:01:32
Those two convicts sound like real ‘skellums’. I hope they are soon recaptured. Their escape has even made it onto the South African news channel. I like your story and am so happy they didn’t find any juicy steaks or French fries. 🙂
Jun 11, 2015 @ 04:44:16
Good story and scary stuff. I remember driving by a huge prison complex in Nevada and all the signs warning not to pick up hitchhikers… Well, yes, indeed. I hope they catch them soon, before they hurt anybody.
Jun 11, 2015 @ 04:21:15
As much as I condemn them for thieving, I understand their frustration at finding only junk food in the house; I’d probably react similarly, but would hear the sirens. Nicely written.
(Should it be ‘peeked’?)
Jun 11, 2015 @ 02:36:10
I really like this story, esp the “timid” shadow. Great work from you, despicable work from D&D .
