This is cold and flu season.
But I’ve got a different kind of bug…the shutterbug.
I caught it when I made a total impulse buy.
Let me explain.
I went to my new Pacific NW dentist just to get my teeth cleaned.
No biggie, right?
Wrong.
After two hours of poking, prodding, and trying to avoid lock-jaw, I discovered several disturbing facts:
1. My NYS dentist must have gotten her degree in The Witch School of Dental Hygiene where bacteria and mercury are a mouth’s best friends.
2. All of my mercury fillings need to be replaced because they are highly toxic mercury (duh) and because they are degrading, thus allowing a bacteria Bat Mitzvah to happen under each tooth.
3. I have a cracked tooth that needs a crown and it’s been cracked a long time judging by the rivers of bacteria flowing around it.
4. I have some serious gum disease from all this bacteria festering in my NYS mouth.
Total cost for getting my mouth as healthy as an old camel’s mouth: $4,000 and change.
I left the dentist’s office:
1. Happy that all this mercury in my mouth will be gone.
2. Sad that I’m among half of the American population with periodontal disease.
3. Feeling like I needed something to cheer me up.
So I bought myself (and Phil) an Nikon DL-7100 digital SLR camera with two lenses.
Yeah. I know what you’re thinking.
1. Lorna, you have to spend the equivalent of buying a used car to repair your mouth, and you go out and buy an expensive camera?
I did.
2. Lorna, you know nothing about photography (we’ve seen your pictures), and you buy a camera with more bells and whistles than a kiddie train ride in Disney Land?
Yup.
3. Lorna, do you know the symptoms of depression?
Apparently I’m a bit rusty on the checklist.
Well, to all you skeptics out there, piffle, I say!
Phil and I have been reading the 300+ page manual on how to turn the darned thing on and took our new camera for a test drive this past weekend.
We went to a local wildlife refuge where you can only drive around, stay in your car and take pictures.
So we did.

This one, too. He came out with some wiggly, squiggly thing in he beak. Got a picture of that, too. But…yuck.
So, how did I do? Should I have gone home and flossed rather than gone to a store and shopped?
I think I’m going to take a class on basic photography once I figure out how to turn the camera off.
I also want a more powerful zoomy lens. But I many have to wait until I pay off my used car teeth bill.

Lucky you! Imagine the sweets and ice-cream you could buy for $4,000. Hmmm. You may need other health care equipment if you did that… 😉
Mar 03, 2015 @ 20:46:36
You know I’m here to support you in any way I can. ❤
Mar 03, 2015 @ 15:47:11
Thanks Lorna.
Mar 03, 2015 @ 15:11:36
Ooh, you’ve got me worried now, I’ve only just been to the dentist where I was able to show him my fine display of antique fillings. They don’t seem to make the same fuss here about things degrading, rivers of bacteria and the like, so I suppose we get on with falling to pieces and spend the money we’ve saved on sweets and ice-cream
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:36:35
I’m such a patriot–doing my job to stimulate the economy!
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:34:12
My best to your mother and thanks for your comments about my pictures. I’m such a novice, but photography is really fun!
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:31:40
It’s a travesty of nature that I wasn’t born wealthy!
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:30:29
Good for you on the camera! As for avoiding the dentist, it will only get more costly as the months/years go by.
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:28:01
I did. He was more reasonable than others in the area. There’s money in people’s mouths!
And I was enjoying your photography, V!
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:24:45
I just hope my new fillings are safe and keep the bacteria out.
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:22:34
Thanks. And I hate putting money into my mouth. It’s bitter, my friend, very bitter.
Mar 03, 2015 @ 12:18:40
Sorry about your husband. Hope the recovery is going well…for both of you. Just contact me via my email (dizzylorna@hotmail.com) when you feel ready, okay? In the meantime, I’ll read your book so I will be prepared! 🙂
Mar 02, 2015 @ 14:30:14
Lorna, re: your comment on my blog–I would love to have you do one of your fun interviews…but in a month or so since I will be playing nurse to my poor old post-op hubby for a while. Thank you.
Mar 02, 2015 @ 09:57:12
Whoa – that’s a gorgeous camera, and you do great work with it!
Good luck with the teeth work. I hate spending money on stuff like that.
Mar 01, 2015 @ 13:39:16
A good camera opens so many new doors! You are off to a great start!
Interesting story about the mercury fillings. According to the FDA, dental amalgam fillings are safe.
Feb 27, 2015 @ 13:54:22
Have fun–I was playing with photography until a lot of things unexpected started happening in my life (which have kept me from blogging, too.
Re: the dentist–please get a 2nd opinion–sometimes dentists see an opportunity for $$$$ in a new patient.
Feb 27, 2015 @ 13:18:51
I’m avoiding the dentist because I think I may need some serious work too, but after years of dreaming and drooling over the idea of a DSLR, last year I lucked into the steal of the century. Mine is the Cannon Rebel T4i, and I must say I take hundreds of pictures a week now! It’s become so much more fun now that I have a new baby in the family to snap at. I call myself the Presley Paparazzi! 🙂
Feb 26, 2015 @ 11:59:29
Gosh, so much toothy work! Dentistry is one thing that isn’t free in the UK with our National Health Service, well it’s free for children, the elderly, and people on certain state benefits. The rest of us get it highly subsided, that is, if you can find a local dentist who is taking on NHS patients, otherwise it’s the private route. We also can’t get free cameras. I know!
Feb 26, 2015 @ 04:49:38
My mother is having several implants done at the moment…Maybe I should suggest a shopping spree but she might resist! I hope you enjoy the camera and survive the teeth treatment. I think the pictures look fabulous!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 22:34:38
There you go … tax refunds mean spending!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:26:52
I hear you! I’m going on a weekend get away and thinking about having to pack up all my dental paraphernalia. I’ll need two suitcases!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:24:45
NO! I’m spending enough money. Thank goodness I’m getting something back on my federal and state taxes!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:23:35
Shoot, Al, you just can’t resist a pun, can you? Thanks for the vote of confidence. 🙂
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:21:55
I’ll have to ask. I’m going to qualify for them after all this work is done!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:21:04
The manual for this camera is as long as a novel and they have online support, You Tube video tutorials, etc. I have a lot of learning ahead of me. Thank goodness there is an auto shoot setting (which I used for these photos).
I used a zoom lens from the car. Apparently these birds are used to cars going slowly by, because this one didn’t seem to notice me. I wasn’t that close, but I wasn’t that far away, either.
As for the dental work…all I can say is double ouch. Had the first phase of the fillings replaced today and my jaw is very sore. At least half the mercury is gone…
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:16:18
Thanks Sara. I know I have a lot to learn, but I’m at a point in my life where I want to learn something new. Maybe it’s because Scrappy is gone and I need something to distract me. Who knows!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:14:22
Thanks, Izzy! No, the work my other dentist did remains in tact. She just didn’t take care of all this darned bacteria and degraded fillings (which is good in a way since she would have replaced them with mercury)!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 19:12:28
So what’s stopping you? 😉
Feb 25, 2015 @ 17:36:49
My teeth are paid for. I want a camera like yours!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 15:30:22
I’m always shocked by the prices I get each time I go to the dentist. They like to have lots of O’s in their estimates. Hope they don’t alter all the work the braces did.
Bravo … your photos look terrific. Your camera is one I’ve never seen. I hope you get many years of joy with it. : )
Feb 25, 2015 @ 14:50:53
Boy, what a drag after you got all those teeth straightened. Good luck with all that, and good luck with your new photography hobby too. From your pictures it seems you’re a natural!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 11:38:43
I used to love photography when we had film cameras. Since then, I’ve bought three different similar digital cameras such a yours, and haven’t figured a one of them out. They are so complicated, so I haven’t taken near the awesome photos I used to take with film. I have framed photos hanging in my house from those old film photos.
I love the reflection photos. How did you get so close? I’ve tried photographing those birds at our man-made lake, but they fly off. Great job.
Oh, and sorry about your teeth. May it go by smoothly and painlessly.
Feb 25, 2015 @ 10:38:32
Major dental bummer! Glad you found someone who will take care of you. Do they take food stamps?!
Feb 25, 2015 @ 09:05:29
I think Nikon is glad you were down in the mouth. Those pictures are very good. I shudder to think of great photographer you will be.
Feb 25, 2015 @ 07:25:53
Wow … two expenses in opposite directions. Of course I’ve done a spontaneous buy, but the bigger questions are when, what, and why … but I can’t remember. Enjoy the two camera … so, do you have a “buy” in mind to celebrate the completed dental work?
Feb 25, 2015 @ 00:52:18
Of course, you should have a camera. With your way with pictures? Are you kidding? PS. I’ve had the whole gum cleaning thing too and am out the other side. Now I have nightmares about being marooned on a desert island without my Piksters (the little tooth brush thingies).
Feb 24, 2015 @ 20:51:36
🙂
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:37:43
Never thought about it as fashion accessory…I like the idea! Thanks!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:37:00
Good suggestion. I’ve got to stop talking to myself, anyway! 😉 XXOO
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:35:26
Thanks Diana. My sewing room is still a mess and my writing muse must be off running with Scrappy in the Great Beyond. I’ve got to do something with my time, right?
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:34:14
Yep. That was a coyote just wandering through one of the dryer parts of the marsh lands. Amazing, huh? I hope your dentist isn’t charging you interest.
I’m going to try to do all the work quickly. I just want all the mercury out of my mouth. It’s the crown that’ adding over $1000 to the total bill. And the cleaning/treatment for the periodontal disease was about $1000. Sheesh! I’m definitely putting my money where my mouth is!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:30:28
Ha! I’d have to open real wide to show the $4000 job. That’s a selfie even I don’t think I’d want to see!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:29:05
Well, you just made my day. A pro telling me that one of my shots could be framed. Maybe I have a future in photography after all! 🙂
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:27:25
If what this dentist does leads to my improved health (and no dentures in the near future), then I’ll pay his price and open wide!
Glad you like the preliminary shots. I have a lot to learn, but a camera that will last me through a lot of learning…I think. 😉
Feb 24, 2015 @ 19:25:18
I’m not a shopper by nature, so this spontaneous purchase was out of character for me. Still, I’m glad I did it. I’ve had an itch to try photography…mostly because my sewing room remains a mess. It’s much smaller than my former sewing room and I don’t know how to fit everything I haven’t already dearly departed with. Oh well…
Feb 24, 2015 @ 18:53:42
I think you did well.
Have I ever made an impulse purchase? I made a zillion of them 30 years ago when I was sick and depressed == stereo, TV, etc etc etc. It was costly – and I had credit problems for years. Oh well. I did learn. You not only give the clerk the card, you have to pay the bills. Sheesh!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 17:40:56
It seems to me that you can take a good photo even though it is new and not read the manual.. keep clicking and have a large SD card.. you are brave, I hate dentists, well not personally just what they do,, the thought is more worrying than reality….
Feb 24, 2015 @ 16:48:09
Beautiful camera and beautiful shots. I really like the first swan pic. That’s frameable. I’ve been a camera fanatic since grade school. I used to develop my own film and had a darkroom in the basement. As far as spur-of-the-moment purchases, that was a good one. There is not enough time or room to tell you about all of my spur-of-the-moment purchases.
Feb 24, 2015 @ 16:43:35
You know what they say, Lorna? “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.” Your little consolation prize was totally deserved. Enjoy your new toy. It does take beautiful pics, and maybe when your teeth are all perfect and expensively sorted, you can do a selfie. 😀 xx
Feb 24, 2015 @ 16:15:38
I have a little Nikon-14X with the optical zoom, and I thought I was doing good. You’re new camera makes mine look pitiful. I think you getting a camera is fantastic, and the pictures look great. Imagine when you master it. Good luck. Was that a coyote in the one picture? About the dentist. I’m on the payment plan at mine. $136.00/month for two years, and that’s for about three hours of work!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 16:07:09
Of course you had to buy it! Silly question. You’ve got all this new stuff to take pictures of and the photos are really good. Keep snapping those pics!
Feb 24, 2015 @ 16:06:10
Wow, great photos. Rest your mouth, use your hands. 😉
Feb 24, 2015 @ 15:59:56
Go for it! A camera helps you see the world through new eyes. And it will impact your writing in a positive way! And it makes a great fashion accessory. (Sorry about the dentist bill!)
