Is anyone out there still reading my blog?
Whew.
I was kind of afraid. They say absence makes the blogger grow fonder of other bloggers.
There are some very good reasons I’ve been on the quiet side around here.
1. Rewriting a novel is harder work than writing the blasted thing.
2. Dag-blammed Netflix. “Upstairs, Downstairs” had five seasons of 13 episodes each and they were all really good.
3. I’ve been sewing up a storm to make crafty bags/totes for an Artists’ Fair coming up in mid-July. My Bernina was smoking hot, but she survived and so did I. I’ve got lots of neat things to sell–all designed and made by me!
4. Lists are time-consuming to think of.
Well, anyway, It’s about time I showed my face around here and that’s what this blog is about.
I just want to catch you up on some news and then I’ll get back to my regular zany blogifying.
My braces are off!
This would be way more exciting news if I was using braces to support my legs or my back or my neck or something mondo important, but the braces were on my teeth.
Still, they were a pain and now they are gone. I have a pretty smile again. See for yourself.
Two of my blogger buddies are running promotions of their awesome books!
Check out these two bloggers, both accomplished authors and bloggers. They are each running limited-time, amazing offers on their most recently published books. Don’t miss out on these opportunities for some great summer reading FOR FREE!
My absolutely favorite blogger is running a FREE promotion
of her totally awesome memoir!
Yup, from July 1st to July 5th (5, count ’em, 5 days), How Was I Supposed to Know? The Adventures of a Girl Whose Name Means Lost (2nd ed.) will be available for free (e-version only) on Amazon.com. If you missed the first promotion several months ago, now is your chance to nab a free copy or tell a friend about a funny yet poignant read for their summer reading list. Just PLEASE write a review and post it on Amazon if you download this book. It really helps prospective readers and it helps me, too.

If you don’t do it for my mom, do it for me. It costs money to keep me in the style to which I’m accustomed.
Here is an excerpt telling you what is different about the second (revised) edition:
This memoir is freakishly similar to my life.
Wait. That’s both obvious and not exactly what I meant. I should have said that the journey this memoir has been on since it was first published is freakishly similar to my life story. Are you confused yet? Right. I am, too.
I should have known to expect the unexpected. In the short time since this book was originally released, both it and I have had many adventures, revelations and is-this-really-happening? moments. So many, in fact, that I felt the need to release a second edition. The book, being the agreeable sort, said, “Sure, why not?”
The second edition doesn’t add to my life story. Maybe if I’d been hit by lightning a third time, I would have included the details. But I tend to stay inside during stormy weather. No, I might write a sequel someday if and when someone Up There decides I haven’t had enough excitement for one life time.
So what compelled me to produce a second edition—a new and hopefully improved version of my memoir? Why couldn’t I leave my first book alone?
It’s in my nature to never leave “good enough” alone. Plus I made a promise that I had to keep. Let me explain.
First the promise. Being a novice in the book writing and releasing business, I published my memoir without getting authors and other “authorities” to give it encouraging “thumbs-up” reviews. Being a seasoned reader of books and reviews, you would think I would have known better. Obviously you overestimate my common and business sense. Positive reviews by people “in the know” inspire people to take a chance on an unknown author, right? Despite having no reviews except those of my family and friends when I published, my memoir was actually read by a lot of people (that’s as accurate a figure I have, not being a “numbers” person) who gave me and my book excellent marks. This new edition shares many of the A+ grades I got on my work.
Speaking of A+ grades, this memoir won a literary award. I couldn’t let that accomplishment slip by unnoticed. You will see a medallion on the new cover that you didn’t see on the former cover. This is proof that people “in the know” stuck their thumb up my book! No, wait. That didn’t sound right. My memoir or I (or both of us) got a big “thumbs up!” That sounds better.
Another change from the original version of the memoir is that it’s sleeker. On the advice of a well-respected author and creative writing professor who reviewed the book, I deleted a chapter and merged two others. Some redundant material is now gone. Unlike the actual trajectory of my life, the story of my life is now less cluttered and catawampus.
While it’s hard to please everyone always, I’m a girl who has lived her life trying to do just that. I received feedback about two elements of the book that some people loved and others didn’t appreciate so much: the many lists and using capitalization to emphasize the importance of certain people, situations, or feelings. In an effort to compromise, I reduced the number of lists and decapitated some letters.
Other than adjusting a few words or sentences here and there to improve the flow of passages and correcting seemingly ever-present gaffs no matter how many edits, I left the narrative alone.
You will notice major changes to the front and back covers. I learned some things along the way about cover design and writing pithy blurbs—although you wouldn’t know it from this section.
I sincerely hope you enjoy this book. The best memoirs are, in my opinion, not about the author, but about the reader. That is the book I aspired to write and the book you are, hopefully, about to read.

It’s a process, all right–the teeth and the book! 🙂

Oh my, I almost missed this in my long list of e mail notifications that I can hardly keep up with. Don’t get excited !!! It isn’t from blog followers as much as a bunch of junk in between real blog emails. I’m still plugging along to find blog followers. I never give up though.
Ssooo …
1. I’m real pleased that your back.
2. I’m real pleased your braces are off.
3. I’m real pleased your blog followers haven’t given up on you. As you can see you’ve touched our hearts.
4. I’m pleased you are getting positive reviews by people “in the know.”
5. I’m real pleased you were awarded a literary award and that it will be proudly displayed on your revised addition to showcase your awesomeness.
Well … as you can see you’ve inspired me to make a list. But, I think I’ll stop and just say … WELCOME BACK, mi amiga !!!!
Izzy ❤ hugs ❤

Darling – you look marvelous. You always have. Great smile. Nice to see you’re keeping busy. Whao, more than I could handle. And the joy of writing – I call it the Neverending Story. (I know it’s already been taken, but I like the way it sounds.) Enjoy always, T

Getting them teef to behave is worth the discomfort! Getting a book to behave is harder.
I do hope you were entirely satisfied it was the right thing to do before compressing/deleting/combining. I have had the experience of those catering for lazy readers persuading me to do the same on one book – and I had to undo it all and go back to slightly longer than before, which was actually the real answer.
Jun 28, 2014 @ 13:45:53
Did you go into detail about your Son how is he doing while you had trouble during your marriage? (kind of left that out in the first book.)
Jun 28, 2014 @ 08:16:23
I know I’m not alone–it’s a reassuring feeling… 🙂
Jun 28, 2014 @ 08:15:31
Thanks all, I’m pilot testing my smile and it’s been a success all the way (and I do mean all the way!!!) 😉
Jun 28, 2014 @ 08:14:05
Guess what? My dad’s name was Robert Earl! Freaky, huh? You’re a good daughter in lots of ways. I hope you enjoy this quality time together with your mom!
Jun 27, 2014 @ 13:57:41
Oh, such a long list of responsibilities, Lorna! Even sewing crafty stuff, too! First and foremost, good to know you have not disappeared! I did miss you and will feel bad, since I am now heading off to Cleveland to hang with my Mom, take her to Dr. appts. and generally, relax from my work! I will be trying to ‘catch up’ on my reading, too. Lorna, I am so proud of your book, I know that re-working and editing is time-consuming and a big ‘pain in the butt’ too! I have had experience with helping my Dad edit his book, he trusted me at age 15!! My Mom and he fought like cats and dogs, until she gave up on helping him. She was an English teacher and he was an engineer at NASA. His book was self-published, managing to beat China Syndrome and Chernobyl. (Called, “Hot Lab” by Robert Earle.) None of my closest friends have attempted to read it, just a few men who liked the science fiction parts. Take it easy, keep your chin up! Hey, know any 15 year olds? I was brutal, slashed big sections of my Dad’s book… It was fun! Smiles, Robin

I do miss not seeing you post more frequently, but understand the quandiferous situation you’re in. (Also miss those words you make up). Smart move on the rewrite…hope it really takes off now!
As for the new you… brace yourself…….you look gorgeous!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 21:20:36
Good for you, Lorna!
I’m slower on the uptake in reading blogs these days. Soooo much going on!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 17:20:47
And I’ll be taking pictures during the Artists’ Market so you can see what I created. Have no fears! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 17:19:40
Yes, watched all of the shows you mentioned and more. Darn that Netflix!
I have 2 Bernina, too. No embroidery attachment, though. I tried it once and it seemed too fussy and complicated.
Scrappy is a good sport for wearing my tiara for that picture. He was happy when I took it off from him. I bet you can tell that from they way he looks in the picture!
Thanks for being so supportive of my writing endeavors. The novel is really different than the memoir–not funny at all, but there are some light-hearted moments. Still, it is based on true events and real people…
Jun 26, 2014 @ 17:14:06
With the novel needing my attention, you better believe I’m going to leave it alone! Good to hear from you!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 17:12:00
Good to be back. And having those braces off feel marrrrrvalous! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 16:36:51
Good to see you pop up over the cyber horizon. Your smile looks marrrrrvalous! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 10:35:25
Love the new teeth. Well, I guess they aren’t actually new, just moved around a bit, right?
You sound like me a few years back when I was posting almost every day and then the craft fair got in the way, and then the job search, and then the….I’ve got to check out your book now so that will probably cut into my blog time too. LOL I’m glad I waited for the 2nd edition. I don’t believe you for a minute that you’re going to leave it alone.
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:52:26
Yay- braces off and a beautiful smile! You have been busy. Sounds like you are a binge TV watcher. I do that too. Have you watched “Doc Martin,” “House of Cards,” or “Orange is the New Black?”
So what have you been sewing? I need pictures. Don’t you just love your Bernina? I also have a Bernina, two of them, one an embroidery machine.
Scrappy looks regal in his crown. I would call it a tiara, but that may be too girly for the Scrapster.
Good luck with your new book; I can’t wait to read it. I have already read both editions of your first gem. Excellent reading!!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:14:32
Oh, and I do plan to take pictures of me in my little booth (really a tent like thingy) displaying my creations…
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:13:24
But you seem to manage just fine. I admire that!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:11:45
Thanks! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:11:25
I had the braces on for 9 months–not that long by most people’s standards, I know. But my teeth were quite cooperate in moving. Does that mean they were loose in my gums? Oh dear! I thought the “shades” would be a nice touch because I feel like I have Hollywood star teeth now!
Yup, I just couldn’t leave the 1st edition alone. I swear I’m not touching the book again! I just hope more people will will take a chance and read the 2nd edition…and write a review. There are only two reviews for this new edition on Amazon. 😦
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:07:16
Sure, Rob. I’d be happy to preview your book. If you want I can serve as a beta reader (giving you pointers like keeping it in the active tense not the passive) and give you a review, interview, and help promote the book. Now that I’m not sewing so much, I have more time. Send the manuscript along in an email.
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:03:52
Thanks, Darlin’! I really appreciate the reblog! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:03:04
Thanks, Christine. I paid enough for it!! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:02:40
Thanks, Harry, on both counts! 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:02:17
I haven’t followed Downton Abbey yet. I’ll probably wait 20 years and start the series then! Thanks for the compliment on my teeth. Yes, I’m having them whitened, too. Might as well. They are looking so nice and straight, why not have them look bright and shiny, too? 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 09:00:22
There you go: far from forgotten and its really nice to see a post from you, although \I understand the pressure of real-life and authoring can distract the most committed Blogger
Jun 26, 2014 @ 08:03:41
I cannot understand the captivation of Upstairs Downstairs, it is so old all the actors are now haunting the sets and house it used,, probably bumping into the Downton Abbey stars,, nice smile by the way, did you have teeth cleaned as well, they look brighter, or is that the sunshine.. Nice one Lorna, good to see you again.. 😉
Jun 26, 2014 @ 07:06:43
I do visit and read 🙂 nice smile 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 05:04:03
Nice smile!
Jun 26, 2014 @ 05:02:27
Reblogged this on ckbooksblog and commented:
I had to share this because I really liked this book “How Was I Supposed to Know” By Lorna Lee. I can’t speak for the other free books (Who’s Christine Keleny, anyway?) but I would definitely recommend Lorna’s book. She’s got a great sense of humor and a good story to tell.
Jun 26, 2014 @ 02:46:10
Hey you were pretty before hand now you’re gorgeous… love the blurb about your rewrite… I doubt strongly that I would even attempt that at all… the first trip through was hard enough and having such a brilliant editor help an awful lot… her comment like “stay in the passive tense and not the active” or the other way round, I can’t remember which, did nothing more than make me realise I’m no author. I had no clue what she was talking about, yet she has turned my words into something I’m very proud of… I enjoyed reading your first edition and wondered if you’d like to read my first edition in return? No pressure I know you are busy and can hear that Bernina screaming for more… just thought you might want a preview…
Jun 26, 2014 @ 02:29:10
Hello!!! I love your new teeth and I also love how removing the braces made cool shades appear over your eyes. That doesn’t seem very long you had the braces on! (Although it probably feels a long time to you, I remember the discomfort of them when I had them as an adult). Also love that you’ve done a second edition of your book, and that you’ve been busy with lots of things. Maybe you’ll show us your crafts some time? 🙂
Jun 26, 2014 @ 01:42:03
Yay!!!!!
