Welcome back to this weekly (as opposed to weakly) attempt to “Occupy the Blog-o-Sphere” each Thursday. I offer this hopefully uplifting message to brighten your day and bring something buoyant into your life. As you move through your day with a renewed outlook, may you pass it along.
This has been quite a week of hatred and violence around the world and here in America. I know of only one antidote to these destructive forces: love. Where love flourishes, hate cannot grow roots or thrive.
Adults can be a bit jaded about love, having had less than satisfying experiences with their relationships. But children view love, perhaps, with a purer heart. Dogs probably do, too, but they’re harder to quote.
In this week’s post, I want to share with you some definitions I found of “love” from a group of 4 to 8 year olds. I hope you find them inspiring, sweet, and funny. If they open your heart even a little bit, the love that comes from you will surely counteract in some way the hatred hanging in the air surrounding us. I know it will. It has to.
“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.” – Billy – age 4
“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” – Rebecca – age 8
“Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.” – Karl – age 5
“Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.” – Chrissy – age 6
“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” – Terri – age 4
“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.” – Danny – age 7
“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.” – Nikka – age 6
“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.” – Noelle – age 7
“During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore.” – Cindy – age 8
“My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.” – Clare – age 6
“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.” – Elaine-age 5
“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.” – Chris – age 7
“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” – Karen – age 7
“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn’t think it’s gross.” – Mark – age 6
“You really shouldn’t say ‘I Love You’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.” – Jessica – age 8

I’m working on it. Chewing on a veggie dog treat to get in the right frame of mind as I type this… 😉

So very sweet… I could feel some love shooting out into the world from my heart as I read this, Lorna! Now about those dog thoughts…if anyone could channel a dog, it would be you…I want to read some dog pondering. 🙂
Sep 22, 2012 @ 10:05:10
Yeah, no kidding. I might have to do a post on those, because I can channel dogs’ thoughts. You’d be surprised what they ponder…

Love the quotes. The dog ones would be damn good too, though.

I’ll ask next time we talk, which I hope is soon. Thanks, my friend!
Sep 21, 2012 @ 10:43:11
Yes! This gives me hope because these kids are the future, right? Let’s hope they can retain their pure view of life and love.
Sep 21, 2012 @ 10:41:53
Thank goodness that there are other definitions of love! 😉
Sep 21, 2012 @ 09:30:24
I love the things kids say. Although I must say, even though I love my husband dearly, I’m grossed out when I see him on the toilet.
Sep 20, 2012 @ 20:45:25
Wow! Can we have these kids running the world please? My heart turned over at Danny’s mother tasting his father’s coffee first and stars coming out of us. Very moved. Thank youxxxx

It’s isn’t surprising that he had some clever little things to say. I’ll bet he has your sense of humor.
Perhaps, he remembers and can let you know. A nice memory builder for a journal.
namaste …..

🙂
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:20:02
Are you going to put on some cologne when you get home and hope someone (other than the dog) sniffs you? 😉
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:17:49
I know! Some were so sweet and others were just funny. I had to include them all! 🙂
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:16:55
I remember my son saying things that made me laugh. Unfortunately that’s as far as my memory takes me. I wish I was blogging back then…I would have been sure to capture his observations and share them with the world. Oh well, these will do.
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:15:09
I wish I had written down all the things Alex came out with…he had some beauties. I just can’t remember them. 😦
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:13:57
I’m glad! You’re so welcome. Hope you’re feeling better!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 18:13:28
Thanks. I was trying to think of something to counteract all this craziness…
Sep 20, 2012 @ 17:38:57
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…….a perfect response to the craziness out there right now……..
Sep 20, 2012 @ 16:30:16
Those little gems were the highlight of my day!!! Thanks!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 15:45:34
I remember as a child watchin the “ARt Linkletter” show. He had kids on there because they always said the dardest things. They do – BUT – they are really great.
I love the first one – how precious to think that the name of someone you love is safe in their mouth. Now – that’s safe. ~~~~ : – )
Sweet ….

Out of the mouths of… When I was little and adults laughed uproariously at something I said, it was terribly confusing. I thought I had said something inappropriate. When I see these delightful insights of children, I hope adults remembered to confirm their delight with what was said.
They certainly tickle my soul. Thanks, Lorna.

I read several of these to my son as I’m watching him today. He loved the one about the cologne and perfume and go out to smell each other. But his favorite was the one where Mom sees Dad on the toilet and doesn’t think it’s gross. He’s still chuckling over that one.
Sep 20, 2012 @ 10:54:45
Just what I needed this morning. Thanks Lorna!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 10:20:15
Some great sentences there Lorna, especially like the toilet one.. that has got to be love.. heehee!
