Welcome to my weekly adventure to “Occupy the Blog-o-Sphere” each Thursday. I offer this hopefully uplifting picture and message to brighten your day and bring something buoyant into your life. As you move through your day with a renewed outlook, may you pass it along.
You’re never too old. It’s never too late.
I prefer to avoid absolutes (both the vodka and the use of words that indicate unconditional/unrestricted provisions such as “always” or “never”) because using absolute statements always gets you into trouble, but I’m going to have to ignore myself on this one. You should, too. My inspirational message this week has two absolutes. I suppose I could have said the same thing a different way: Resist the urge to give up because your dreams might possibly come true at any moment. But something gets lost in the translation. I was trying to be pithy and profound. To do that, I resorted to using absolutes.
What prompted this message, the abrogation of my own rules of linguistic sanity, and that unnecessarily wordy explanation? Finally. A simple answer to a compound question. My mom. We (my sisters and I) recently found out that she has always wanted a pair of diamond stud earrings. She will be 79 this year and this is the first we heard of it. Apparently she mentioned it off-handedly during a chat with my younger sister’s daughter and word spread (as word does among us “girls”).
I know I’m completely…understandably…a bit biased, but I must tell you that my mom is the best mom and dad that a girl could want. She was left with three young children to raise on her own after my dad killed himself. She wanted to protect us from any trouble a step-father could bring into a family of three girls, so she chose to remain single. My mom made sure that each of her girls had what we needed and she went without to give us the best she could afford.
For Mother’s Day, we pooled our resources and gave her the best diamond stud earrings we could afford. She received them during the Derby Day Party–the only time all of us would be together until after Mother’s Day.

My younger sister had a jeweler select the diamonds. Wow did they sparkle, but not as much as Mom’s eyes did when she opened that box.
So, you see. It’s never too late and you’re never too old. My mom never expected to own a pair of diamond stud earrings.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom, and to all the “best” moms out there!
What dazzling surprises are waiting for you? You’ll only find out if never give up!

What a thoughtful gift! There’s nothing like the joy of giving someone you love something you know they’ll love. Happy mother’s day to you and your mom.

Yeah, I didn’t realize how special that picture was until I put it up. Thanks, Peter!

It was good. She’s one special woman. 🙂

Couldn’t agree more, Al. Thanks for your sweet comment! 🙂

Yes they are! And the best joys are from giving, not receiving. 🙂
May 11, 2012 @ 11:51:00
The best gifts are the ones that fulfill an almost secret desire, aren’t they!
(We watched the Kentucky Derby last week-end, and I thought of you and your family wearing your hats!)

Having read the adventures of Lorna over the past year, I know what a wonderful mom she was to you all. What a fitting gift…..a gem for a gem!
May 11, 2012 @ 00:35:17
Oh. I cried. So good 🙂

I agree. I feel like the novice photographer who got the random shot that makes it to the front page of Time Magazine or something. The more I look at it, the more special I see that it is–even my sister’s look of anticipation is priceless…

Do I love your mom? I think so! What a beautiful face. I see where you and your sister found your wrinkle-free faces. That woman can’t be nearly eighty! It’s shameful. 😉 If you had to mortgage the farm for this one image of your mother, it was worth it. 🙂
May 10, 2012 @ 15:45:08
She visited with me earlier this week and she had them on. I am so happy she’s wearing them rather than saving them for some “special occasion” that may never come along. That would be like her… 😉
May 10, 2012 @ 15:41:51
It was a special moment. And I finally had a camera to capture it. 🙂

A very tender and special message you’ve shared with us here today, Lorna. It is never too late to express how you feel. Letting people, who are dear to you, know that they have your appreciation and love is a memory they will never forget. I believe in years to come your sisters and you will be recalling that fabulous expression on your mother’s face. It is truly an image of pure joy and ectasy. HAPPY BIRHTDAY and MOTHER’S DAY to your Mom … and HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to you …!!!!!
Hugs,

That’s the greatest picture, and it makes me wish I’d bought my mom diamonds. I would like to have that memory.
May 10, 2012 @ 11:55:07
Thanks, Jacqueline. I’m so glad I caught that moment.
May 10, 2012 @ 11:54:27
I guess inspiration sometimes evokes tears…
May 10, 2012 @ 11:53:02
Yes. All she ever wanted to be was a wife and a mother. She didn’t have so much luck with the wife part, but she scored big time with the mother part!
May 10, 2012 @ 11:51:24
Couldn’t agree with your more. It was a great moment!
May 10, 2012 @ 11:30:15
I absolutely love it! The look on your mother’s face in the photograph was perfectly captured. Imo, it’s those kind of moments that are absolutely the best gifts in the world. 🙂
May 10, 2012 @ 09:54:20
Definitely a strong family resemblance. What wonderful gifts your mother gave to you and your sisters. 🙂
May 10, 2012 @ 08:36:19
Well now you’ve done it…you brought tears to my eyes….Your Mother sounds wonderful, the absolute definition of the word.
May 10, 2012 @ 07:23:08
How wonderful. Your Mom’s face is just a picture. What a lovely story.
