This piece was written in response to Victoria’s Monday Morning Writing prompt on “darkness.” Her site is Live To Write Today and is chock full of writing prompts and examples of oh-so-fine poetry and prose by many bloggers, including Victoria.
Poetry isn’t my genre, as you can tell if you scan my About page, but darkness allures me. Darkness is so often associated with evil and menace. I, however, find comfort and peace in the shadows. Many people find this a paradox: how could someone so light-hearted be drawn to the dark? Perhaps this poem will give you some insight.

"Moon Magic" a "stained glass" quilt art piece with hand-dyed batiks, machine quilted. Even the "frame" is fabric.
I am a child of the moon.
It was waning on the night of my birth,
A cold mid-November night, when darkness tipped the scales of daylight.
I came into this world in the softness of shadows and swaddling blankets.
In the cool, gentle shadows, I shield myself from hot, penetrating eyes,
Rays that could burn through me, leaving scars without even trying.
Stepping out into the bright light is my act of courage,
An act I can bear only knowing my sweet, darkness awaits to soothe me.
Shadows only exist because of light. I know this irony all too well.
When I gaze upon my own shadow, I see both empty and full–
Empty Lorna ready to be filled and Filled Lorna ready to be emptied.
Just like any child of the moon.

Of course you’re right, Izzy. Thanks for setting me straight (I was a bit off balance)! π

How could you doubt yourself ??? Of course, it is very good. I’m not an expert poet but , to me, it has a voice – your voice- and I like that.
Just do it and don’t worry about correct-ness. Who wrote the rules.?Anyway, make your own rules. It’s for fun not grading.
Love ya silly girl …
Hugs,

Wow, thanks. I wrote that poem in less than half an hour. I really just wanted something to go with the quilted art piece. Do you really think it’s that good? I’m amazed.
I guess I associate poetry with a somber, serious mood–very different than the tone I reach for in my life stories. But I suppose I can be multi-tonal. π

Your quilt is great. The poem oustanding. Good writing, Lorna. I am a moon child so I enjoyed this from many sides. You should write more poems and prose. It has a different tone that is ageeable.
Toodles,
Izzy

Thanks–you would know!
Oct 07, 2011 @ 13:17:58
Very nice, it describes you perfectly.

Thanks so much, Jeanna. Sometimes I get the right words to fit together…
Oct 07, 2011 @ 11:48:33
Lorna, the last lines…. empy waiting to be filled and filled waiting to be emptied… the simple honesty in that. The simplicity in the depth of those words is what fascinated me. Sigh, loved it.

Oh, you should’ve seen the sappy love poems I wrote as a tortured teen. You’d have pulled your long hair out! I’ve written some poems during other tortured times. It seems the best poetry comes out of misery (at least for me). Right now I’m on a heavy dose of steroids (not the muscle-building kind) to deal with a virulent skin rash. Miserable, hence, poem. π

Many thanks!
Oct 07, 2011 @ 10:21:59
From you, that is a high compliment, indeed! π
Oct 07, 2011 @ 10:21:02
Funny, I didn’t see the irony of the line until you pointed it out! I love it–kind of like an unintended pun, which are always the best ones. π
Oct 07, 2011 @ 10:19:42
Thanks so much. I find that everything under the sun (pardon the pun and cliche) has already been said about darkness and light. I just wanted to add something personal to the theme. I’m glad you found something inspirational in my poetic attempt.

We’re Soul Sisters, Janice. Maybe I was channeling you when I wrote it!
Oct 07, 2011 @ 10:12:55
Thanks so much. I just never know what going to come into or out of my head!
Oct 07, 2011 @ 09:40:44
Thats lovely. For a “Not a poet gal” a pretty astonishing effort

Love the quilt, had to look again and again, it looks painted, gorgeous.
Mostly love what you have to say. Wow. It is a moving poem that resonates with my inner Crazy Chick all the way to the last letter.
You write well, woman, loving your expression of the paradoxes of soul.

Like you, Lorna, every once in a while a poem wants life. But you certainly seem to know what you are doing…I don’t!!
Appreciate the profundity of “the shadow exists because of the light.” Thank you – that is the healing truth.

It’s quite cool to see some poetry written by you. I like the line, “I know this irony all too well” concerning the shadows and light.
Oct 06, 2011 @ 21:42:13
I love your stain glassed quilt with frame–so cool! Wonderfully expressive poem too–you can add poetess to your list of attributes.
Oct 06, 2011 @ 20:02:00
Simply lovely – both the art and the words.
Oct 06, 2011 @ 17:50:15
Very nice Lorna. You have a lyrical talent. Perhaps you may consider giving this talent an occasional “voice” as well whenever the mood suits you.
Oct 06, 2011 @ 17:45:53
Thanks, Holly!
Oct 06, 2011 @ 16:25:55
Love the art piece!
Oct 06, 2011 @ 16:05:14
Let’s start with humming, shall we? π
Oct 06, 2011 @ 16:04:08
There’s not too much that can be said about darkness that hasn’t already been said, is there? I should post a link to my post on your blog…forgot about that!
Oct 06, 2011 @ 16:02:15
Thanks, Al!
Oct 06, 2011 @ 15:57:46
Lovely, Lorna.
Oct 06, 2011 @ 15:54:16
I’m afraid you’ve blown your cover, Lorna. This is wonderful poetry and you touch upon the importance of duality. Sometime ago I posted a poem to the effect that darkness is only a degree of light. Everything: good/evil, up/down, male/female, yin/yang exists in opposing pairs. I also find comfort in the shadows, at time. Thank you so much for sharing this, moon child.

Good job for someone who says she doesn’t do poetry. Now, you have to sing it. π
